When to Harvest Fresh Lavender

Timing is everything when it comes to harvesting lavender. To ensure you get the most fragrant blooms, it's best to cut them early in the morning when it's still cool, but after the dew has evaporated. Harvesting when about half of the flower buds have fully opened on the stem is best and allows for continued blooming in the vase.

Techniques for Harvesting Fresh Lavender

To harvest fresh lavender blooms, use a few of our favorite techniques!

  1. Cutting with Shears: Use sharp garden shears or harvesting knife to cut healthy stems. Cut just above the first set of leaves and be sure not to trim too far down the woody stem to keep the plant healthy for future blooms!

  2. Harvesting: harvest when about half of the flower buds have fully opened on the stem and allows for continued blooming in the vase.

  3. Choose the Right Time: Best time to harvest is in the early morning, but when dew has dried - when the flowers' essential oils are at their peak.

  4. Post-Harvest Care: Once you've cut your lavender stems, remove any dead leaves and any foliage near the bottom of stem.

  5. Water: Place in about 1-2" of water. Not much or your stems will turn brown and won't last as long. You can also replace the water periodically.

  6. Sunlight and Heat: Place vase in a cool area out of direct sunlight for maximum vase life.

  7. Pro Tip: We like to store our fresh lavender in our floral cooler - even if harvested that morning, it goes right in the cooler until needed. This ensures optimal freshness for our customers or florists using fresh lavender. Fresh lavender stored in a floral cooler (or fridge) will last several weeks this way!

More Uses for Fresh Lavender:
